Governor’s College Emerged Victorious at Quiz Competition

As 10th Edition of the National Quiz Competition on Legislature and Democracy 2025 has come to an end in Kano, Prestigious Governor’s College has clinched the 1st position making it to represent Kano State at the forthcoming North West National Quiz Competition.

The Competition organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) under the supervision of the National Assembly Abuja was aimed at increasing knowledge of the nation’s youth about the roles of legislative Arm of Government in promoting democratic values in a statement issued by the Director Public Enlightenment of the Ministry Balarabe Abdullahi Kiru.

Thematic areas covered by the quiz competition include legislative oversight functions, accountability, legislative practice and procedures, national assembly structure, conduct and performance as well as constitution and governance among others.

The Competition involved six Secondary Schools with two Schools each selected from the three Senatorial zones of the state.

The Schools include Governor’s College, Government Girls Secondary School Kadawa, Science College Dawakin Tofa, Government Girls Secondary School Gwarzo, , Girls Science and Technical College Sumaila and Government Secondary School Rano.

Declaring the competition open at Kano State Library Board, the Chairman House Committee on Education, Suleiman Mukhtar Ishaq Madobi(Member representing Madobi Constituency in the State House of Assembly) was represented by the Assistant Chief Legislative Officer Umar Abdulganiyu emphasized that the House is committed towards supporting such programme aimed at educating young and talented students on the roles and responsibilities of legislative Arm of Government.

Suleiman Mukhtar disclosed that as tradition any participating school that emerged winner of the competition would be invited to the House to further encourage and support them to face the challenges in the National Competition.

He explained that the House is fully committed to receive any School that intends to visit the Assembly for excursion to monitor legislative activities of the House.

” Our door will remains open for our students to have full knowledge about the best practice of the Legislative duties and other procedures so that they can play a key role in promoting the system one day” he stated.

In his remarks, the State Commissioner of Education Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda represented by the Director Educational Support Services Hajiya Halima Sadiya Tukur appreciated the leadership and Members of the National Assembly for prioritizing civic education and youth engagement on legislative matters.

He noted that the event is beyond Quiz Competition but a gathering that celebrates knowledge, inspires young minds and lay a solid foundation for more informed and participatory citizens.

” My dear students, your presence here signifies your dedication to learning about pillars of our democracy and rule of law, legislative process, constitutional running and civic responsibility.

These are not topics for academic enquiry but they are the foundation upon which our nation stands ” Makoda noted.

Also Speaking, the Executive Secretary, Kano State Library Board, Dr. Kabiru Ado Zakirai thanked the State and National Assembly for partnering with the Institute for bringing the program to the Board.

Announcing the winners, the Director General of the National Institute for legislative and Democratic Studies Professor Abubakar O. Suleiman represented by the Programme State Coordinator Aliyu Abdullahi explained that Governor’s College won the first position, Government Girls Secondary School Gwarzo won the second position while Government Secondary School Rano won third position respectively.

Prof. Abubakar recalled that the first edition of the competition was held in the year 2016 with participating schools drawn strictly within the Federal Capital Territory.

” The competition continued to be an annual event after the directive by the former Governing Council of the Institute headed by the Senate President and Speaker National House of Representatives to expand the programme to all parts of the country.

This 10th edition is the 4th time the competition is done at the national level ” The DG said.

At the end of the programme, certificates of attendance were presented to the participating schools and prizes presented to the winners by the Institute.
